Rise In NHS Dental Tooth Extractions And Dentures, But Fall In Fillings And Crowns, UK
A patient undergoing NHS dental treatment under the new contractual arrangements is more likely to have dentures or tooth extractions and less likely to have fillings or crowns than under the old arrangements, a report released by The NHS Information Centre (The NHS IC) suggests. The report, Dental Treatment Band Analysis: England and Wales, 2007/08, considered nearly 10,000 adult dental Courses of Treatment (CoTs) in England and nearly 1,500 adult CoTs in Wales.

Problems Persist Two Years After New Dental Contract, UK
NHS dentists and their patients still face significant problems according to reports published today by the NHS Information Centre. The reports show that more than one million fewer patients in England have been able to access NHS dentistry since the introduction of a new contract for dentists and patient charges in April 2006.

Wisdom Teeth As Source Of Stem Cells
Researchers in Japan have successfully made stem cells from wisdom teeth, creating an alternative source of pluripotent cells for researching and treating disease and avoiding the ethical problems surrounding the use of embryonic stem cells. Scientists at Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, which is funded by the government, said they used wisdom teeth that had been frozen for three years after being removed from a 10 year old girl.

U.S. District Court Judge Temporarily Blocks Medi-Cal Cuts
A U.S. District Court judge in Los Angeles temporarily blocked implementation of a proposed 10% cut to Medi-Cal payments for doctors, dentists and pharmacies, stating the changes would violate federal laws and reduce the quality of medical care for millions of people, the Sacramento Bee reports (Yamamura/Sanders, Sacramento Bee, 8/20).

UCSF Faculty Receive $13.7M From CIRM For Stem Cell Research
Five UCSF stem cell scientists have received New Faculty grants from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, support that will allow them to pursue lines of investigation ultimately aimed at developing treatment strategies for such conditions as cancer, heart disease, tooth regeneration, liver disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The UCSF grants, which range from about $2 million to $3 million each, total $13.

Scientists have discovered a new species of bacteria in the mouth. Edinburgh Clinical Dental Technician Course A UK First
The first stand-alone course for clinical dental technicians in the UK will begin in Edinburgh later this year following provisional approval from the General Dental Council. The course is open to GDC-registered dental technicians. The GDC gave provisional approval to the 37-week course at the Edinburgh Dental Institute at a recent meeting. But full approval won't be given until the course has been inspected by the GDC ahead of the first intake graduating.

Researchers Report Periodontal Disease Independently Predicts New Onset Diabetes
Periodontal disease may be an independent predictor of incident Type 2 diabetes, according to a study by researchers at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. While diabetes has long been believed to be a risk factor for periodontal infections, this is the first study exploring whether the reverse might also be true, that is, if periodontal infections can contribute to the development of diabetes.
